I could write a book on this subject – at least my theory on life after death. There is no straightforward answer to the question of “What happens after we die?” I have researched a great deal in this area, and have never found an “all inclusive” explanation. I have however put together a rather lengthy and detailed theory of my own. I’ll share some of it here…
First of all, I have not studied EVERY culture’s explanation of what happens after death, I mostly focused on shamanic and pagan cultures, which is where a lot of this information comes from.
The soul is predispositioned to start its journey according to the person’s spiritual beliefs. If you look at this as a form of “programing” where the soul, which may be very confused - especially if one dies in an accident and doesn’t know that they are dead (as is a case often indicated in paranormal and religious references) kind of goes on “auto-pilot”. The soul says, “If I’m dead, then I am to go to _______” (destination depends on their beliefs – and from cultural descriptions vary – sometimes greatly) –that is of course if they are aware they are dead. However this “auto-pilot” doesn’t have GPS and the “pilot” is lost, confused and doesn’t know up from down from left from right.
Now there are cases when some kind of guide assists the soul on the journey and in that case one is “good to go”. However this doesn’t happen randomly, it happens more like in the Norse beliefs in which the Valkyries gather the souls Odin chooses for Valhalla - this is in some way a “pre-arranged” matter. Whether it is arranged by gods or spirits or between the individual and a spirit through ritual performed before death - this is something that MUST be pre-arranged.
Now with the journey - not all cultures are as fortunate as the Norse to have multiple possible destinations (Vallhalla, Folkvangr, Helgafjell, Hel – I have never heard of the Well of Urdr – I’d like to know more about it.) however this greatly helps to prove my afterlife theory – anyway, the soul is in danger because spiritual energy must hold a kind of “grounding” – when we are in the physical body we are “grounded” to it, and when we reach our afterlife destination we become grounded there. This grounding is like a rope, tether, or compass for a soul – that is why without it, the soul is in such a confused and dangerous state. While the soul is on the journey, its energy is desperate to make this connection. If a soul consumes any energy in a location, it will become grounded there, that is why the shamanic cultures say, “DO NOT EAT THE FOOD OR DRINK THE WATER UNTIL YOU REACH YOUR DESTINATION”. Also, there are so many hazards on the journey that can trap a soul in a location, or make it turn back and end up back here.
I’ll add one more thing here, so I don’t end up writing a book… My theory for why there are so many destinations (Vallhalla, Folkvangr, Helgafjell, Heaven, Temath, Happy Hunting Grounds, etc.) is this – many of these places are intermediary “lay-over” locations that a soul may spend some time at. Why? There are other energies this soul still needs to collect, even though the physical body is gone, such as, connecting with ancestral energies. One needs to understand that as described in shamanic and pagan cultures we have two souls. The Eternal Spirit which is elsewhere and the current life energies we are collecting here while in these physical bodies. The later of course is the soul we are talking about that leaves the body after death and heads for one of these locations. Eventually this soul (also called the “travelling soul”) will find its way to the Eternal Spirit where it will eventually join its energy with - that location is somewhere else altogether different – I am not exactly sure where, but of course, I have a theory!
