Smudging is accomplished by burning smudging herbs in a Smudging Vessel such as an abalone shell, and allowing the smoke from the burning component(s) to cover the body, place, or object. Flat cedar is the smudging component of preference for me. I only use smudge sticks if I absolutely have to such as outdoors in a strong wind.
Remember that smudging sends out ALL energies good and bad including spirits so it is extremely important to follow these instructions fully.
If smudging indoors it is important to open a couple of windows or doors to allow the energy to leave the structure. Also if smudging a building, open all drawers, doors, closets, appliances, etc. and smudge inside all of these spaces too. Energy can hide in these spaces and remain.
Smudging Components
Sage – Sage is a primary component of smudging. Its purpose in smudging is for purification.
Cedar – Cedar is a primary component of smudging. Its purpose in smudging is for protection.
Copal - Copal is a primary component of smudging. Its purpose in smudging is for purification.
Lavender – Lavender is a secondary component of smudging. Its purpose is for bringing balance.
Mugwort – Mugwort is a secondary component of smudging. Its purpose is for dispelling evil and negative spirits.
Willow – Willow is a secondary component of smudging. Its purpose is to bring a dreamtime connection to the smudging.
Note: Sweetgrass – Sweetgrass is not a component of smudging. Its purpose is for calling in the spirits.
A basic smudging recipe:
A base component is chosen - sage, cedar or copal. All three can be used if desired in equal quantities.
Smudging to clear one’s aura or personal energies:
Cedar is used as the base component (50 % of mix). Sage and/or copal may be added (20% each or 40% of one). Lavender is also added to bring balance (10% of mix).
Smudging to cast away an attached evil or negative entity:
A base component is chosen - sage, cedar or copal. All three can be used if desired in equal quantities (50% of mix). Mugwort is added (50% of mix).
Smudging to cleanse oneself before access to dreamtime:
Willow is used as the base component (50% of mix). Sage, cedar, and/or copal is added at a ratio of 10% (each) of the base component. Lavender may also be added at 10% ratio as well. Mugwort may be added at 10% ratio if evil or negative entities may be encountered in the dreamtime.
Smudging should always be accomplished in this order: self, place, objects, and then people.
To properly smudge a person or yourself:
1. Start from top of head or the base of feet. I recommend starting at the head and working down.
2. Always smudge in a clockwise direction.
3. Allow smudging smoke to completely cover the body.
4. A feather fan may be used.
To properly smudge home:
1. Start in lowest level of home and work upward.
2. Start on the easternmost wall of home and work clockwise.
3. Smudge all doors and windows in a complete clockwise circle.
4. Smudge every corner, door, drawer, and space.
5. Smudge all mirrors WELL.
6. A feather fan may be used.
To properly smudge an object:
1. Hold object in smudging smoke, and allow it to thoroughly cover the object.
2. If object is too large, work smudge around object in clockwise fashion also.
3. A feather fan may be used.
Once all smudging has been completed and the smoke has dissipated from the location, either extinguish any remaining smudge or place it outside away from the space you are clearing, then start over from where you began the smudging ritual and follow the same path with a rattle, drum or burning sweet grass while praying to call back in the personal spirits of everyone involved. These include spirit powers, spirit guides and totem spirits. Be sure to do this in all the same spaces including drawers, doors, appliances, etc.
To do this, simple state something like, “I invite back in to this space my (our) spirit powers, spirit guides, and spirit animals.”
Once finished, close everything back up and close any windows and doors and the cleansing is finished.
