To explain what the gods are to me, I have to start by first explaining my theory of existence.
Existence to me is a series of “levels” of creation. Each level is created by a cause and effect. The universe comes down to two forces, much like yin and yang, hot and cold, darkness and light. These are the forces of creation and destruction. These two forces must exist. They cancel each other out, and are a result of one another. They are the most basic, most primal elements of the universe; from them comes everything. They have no physical or spiritual form. They are a primordial form of consciousness. An example of these forces in nature is a forest fire. The fire burns down the forest, yet the residual of that destruction contains all the elements needed to create a new forest over time.
Creation is not the result of ONE being or god, at least on any level that we can comprehend. Creation is a series of “levels” of creation and destruction. What are these elements or creation and destruction? In the mythology of the Chinook Indians of the Pacific Northwest Coast North America, Etalapus, the creator is merely a manifestation of Ekone the creative force of the universe. Ekone sacrificed a piece of itself with the help of Ekutoch (the destructive force) to create Etalapus who then began to create all things spiritual and physical, but first Etalapus had to create other elements to assist in this task. Where does Etalapus get the material to create these elements? It comes from the process of Ekone and Ekutoch. As Etalapus creates he gives everything energy and spirit, and therefore consciousness. These elements eventually become the spirits or gods of the Chinook people.
We know that the process of creation from our Norse mythology is in fact similar to that of the Chinook mythology. From destruction comes creation, and with each step something new is the result. From the death of a giant, for example comes the creation of another being. There is one more element to my theory. Many scholars call it “divine influence”, which is the purpose behind everything. No, the gods are not this influence, but they are part of the many layers that is creation – each with a particular task or job that is necessary for everything to exist.
Creation can be broken down into three “elements” if you will: energy, matter, and consciousness. These three elements must be able to exist within the parameters of the forces of creation and destruction – which means something of each must be able to remain through the process of their continual change or transformations. To do so, something must be able to guide or influence the process. To do this, creation must have an established set of rules. Where there are rules there must be elements in place to enforce them. These elements need to exist on each “level” of creation. Because of the carryover between layers that exists in the act of creation/destruction; the enforcer of each “level” can interact with the next “level” down or up the chain of creation.
Things do get complicated here, and unless someone really wants to spend time with me discussing this, let’s just simply say that creation has rules and a process to enforce the rules. However, that which enforces the rules MUST be flexible with the rules to ensure creation doesn’t come to a complete halt and not exist – which could happen. Therefore, what enforces these rules must have consciousness.
Now we get into what the gods are to me.
Before I explain the gods, there is one more element I need to cover. That is the connection of all things. We have all heard that everything is connected. However, I believe there are many different ways to connect each link in the chain of creation. This will explain why there are multiple gods or spirits. I do not believe that the gods of one culture are one-and-the-same as the gods of another culture. Why? I call this the “redundancy factor of the universe”, or better yet, the multiverses. Just like in much of how the physical world exists with redundancy factors, redundancy factors exist through all of creation. If it wasn’t for these redundancy factors, creation would be so fragile that it would be a constant flux of cohesion and diffusion, and it wouldn’t be able to hold itself together.
These redundancy factors require that creation be experienced, and even exist in an infinite amount of ways. Within each experience of creation, the redundancy exists with gods who share different “duties” between the plethora of ways in which they exist within one experience or universe, which I shall call a realm. Therefore, we have multiple gods in each realm of existence to ensure that there is enough redundancy within each realm.
Everything is connected, and consciousness exists in many forms (redundancy) through all of creation. Consciousness is what truly combines everything and holds it together. However, consciousness is a delicate thing, which can easily be corrupted, altered, or destroyed. Everything is connected to everything else, on all levels of creation. Therefore, everything relies on everything else to exist. With redundancy, individual things can be removed from the whole and the whole can still remain intact. Have you heard the saying, “When the world believed in magic, magic existed?” That is a perfect example of what I mean. Reality is a funny thing; we believe in this reality, therefore it exists. What if we all decided to stop believing this reality? What would happen? Would everything fall apart? Would we shift into another form of reality? We don’t know. Who does?
Creation requires levels of knowledge and wisdom, along with the power to guide the course or one of the many courses (redundancy) that creation must take. Who ensures this will happen? Each level of creation has its own means of ensuring this. Each level has the knowledge and wisdom required for its own level and the associated knowledge to interact with the levels on either side of it in the “chain” of levels that is creation.
The gods are forces created to act as enforcers to govern these laws. However, the laws were made to be manipulated or bent to ensure the proper course is achieved for creation. Now remember what I said about magic? Consciousness IS the guiding factor of creation – in a way, the glue that holds things together. Each level must be conscious of the preceding and following levels; in other words, believe that they are there so that all things remain connected. The gods must be believed in to be part of existence, and that belief, of course comes from this level of existence - in other words, us. Redundancy is a must here, and therefore the necessity of multiple gods and multiple cultures.
To answer the question of what the gods are to me: They are a governing force of creation, not solely responsible for creation itself, but the progression of creation. They have the ability to manipulate or change parts of creation, to keep it on course. They are also a major part of the consciousness of the universe, and contribute to its structure and “look” if you will, but are also “controlled” by consciousness, and it is that control that guides their “look” or impression as it appears to the rest of creation. In other words, they exist because of consciousness, and look and act as they do due to the interaction with them on multiple levels.
Basically what I am saying is: they are an interactive force of creation, whose purpose is to guide elements of creation toward a predisposed destination governed by other forces, and whose own “being” is dependent on the conscious impression given to them by the consciousnesses that interact with them throughout creation. As beings that require conscious interaction, they can therefore be lost to the whole of creation, if that interaction ceases. They are powerful beings who can govern, guide, and influence our lives; and also rely on us and the rest of creation to ensure their ongoing existence. Just as we do, they have form, meaning, individuality, and intellect. Just as we can, they can be harmed, destroyed, or diminished – although maybe not in the same way or by the same means. They also have consciousness, intellect, and personality much like our own.
Do they really eat and drink? In a word, yes – after all, they still require the three elements -consciousness, energy (spirit), and matter – just as we do. Do they interact with us “mortals”? Of course, in many ways. Can they appear before us in physical form? I believe that the gods and the Naturra (earth spirits) around us do so on a regular basis, but usually in subtle ways as to not cause too great an influence on our spiritual paths – another great topic to discuss here!
Think about this: What are we? Do we interact simply on a physical level with just the physical world around us? Or do we act on multiple levels in multiple ways with physical, energetic, and conscious bodies that have experiences beyond just one level of existence?
