Fylgja are so very important on one’s spiritual path, as well as, in one’s daily life. They are guides, protectors, and all around emotional support specialists – as I have been known to say. But most people do not know that they are also magical in the way that they often times bring us the energetic things that we need in our daily life. This is crucial for one who is on the road to recovery from any illness or injury.
Knowing one’s fylgja is extremely valuable for one has an image to focus on during such times, which makes the task of thanking a fylgja all that easier. Do you know what your fylgja is?
There is so much mis-information and New Age belief out there about spirit animals; I want to set the record straight. You often see things on websites such as “Native American animal spirit symbolism,” or “How to choose your animal spirit.” The truth is that spirit animals are spirits that have a special bond with their chosen human counterpart. Spirits are not astrology, oracles, or symbolism. They are spirits that choose to, or not to, work with a human counterpart as a protector and guide both spiritually and physically. Not all people have spirit animals.
Spirits are not chosen by the person, nor do they accept a person without the proper respects and rites. Not all animals seen in spirit, meditation, dream, etc. are spirit animals. Spirit animals cannot be generalized in symbology for, just as a human being, we are not all the same in our attributes. Spirit attributes are as distinct for each spirit animal, as each person’s attributes are different from another person. Each spirit animal has its own personality, attributes, strengths and weakness – not just confined to that of the species of an animal.
Spirit animals choose a person to work with; and after the person seeking a spirit animal performs the proper ceremonies and rituals, makes the appropriate sacrifices to properly acknowledge such a companion, will the mutual bond be complete and spiritual interaction take place. A companion is what they are; they are not servants, tools or property of a human. They are a voluntary partner or associate. They choose to work with the person and in doing so offer protection and guidance. They are not bound to the person. If they are not properly respected, they can choose to leave that person. However, a person with a strong relationship with their spirit animal will have a most loyal companion, who would be willing to sacrifice themselves if need be to protect that person. Not a gift to be taken advantage of or belittled.
Animal attributes that are associated with spirits are actually that of the energy of the physical animal counterpart, and not to be confused with the spirit animal itself. This means that the energies associated with the physical animal counterpart of that spirit animal comes along with that spirit animal, but the spirit also has attributes of it’s own that are far more important and can counteract some of the physical attributes. For example, one person has the spirit of a mouse and another person has the spirit of the lion and this spirit of the lion is more adapt to stealth and hiding than courage, and this spirit of the mouse is more adapt to courage than stealth and hiding, then the dominant attribute brought to the people will be the later.
If a person disrespects there spirit animal in any way, that spirit may leave them and not return. It is a mutual arrangement and not a subservient one. Persons without spirit animals often lack protection and guidance in these areas, which are unique to spirit. Yes we may have ancestor spirits and other spirit guides that can protect and guide us through life, who also choose to be there or not, however, they do not have the ability to intercede like the spirit animal does. There protection and guidance is indirect and requires a specific request, properly made, to intercede for a particular event or action. There interaction in these matters is not automatic nor is it their primary function to do so, unlike a spirit animal.
Spirits animals protect us not only from spiritual harm but also protect us in the physical in often unperceived ways. Times when we have just avoided an accident is the proper time to thank ones spirit animal in a traditional manner. If the proper thanks are not received, again the spirit may decide to leave that person.
They are not teachers bringing us knowledge, they instead bring us instinct. Spirit animals guide us through life. At times when a decision must be made on a course of action involving our more basic instincts such as survival, avoiding danger, choosing a direction, etc. they again provide valuable often subconscious insight, again a time when the proper thanks are in order for such assistance.
Spirit communication can be visual, verbal or telepathic. If we can see spirit and see our spirit animal, our communication can be similar to how people communicate, but more frequently it is of a telepathic nature, with a voice. As with any spirit voice it is not our own voice, it is distinct an often unique. It is a common misconception out there that spirit speaks to us with our own thoughts or our own “inner voice”. This is not so. They are distinct and different, just as people are.
The most important thing to remember about spirits and with any other interaction we have with the spirit world is respect. Proper respect must always be observed, such as spiritual purification, offerings, sacrifices, etc., along with understanding of the taboos of these interactions, is of vital importance to ensure that our spiritual connections be not only maintained, but be allowed to flourish, for without these very important guides in our lives, we condemn ourselves to mishaps and dangers that prevent us from our own spiritual objective, and that is spiritual growth on our paths to become more than we are.
With that said spirit animals can also provide those of us with medical issues valuable support and strength to recover. There are even rituals designed to do just this.
If you wish to know what your spirit animal is, don’t look for a book to tell you. Find a qualified medium to read it for you. When I say qualified, what I am referring to is someone who can distinguish between spirit animals and animal symbology – which does show up in many oracle and psychic readings. I as a spiritualist medium and Norse troldmand have this ability. Not that I am trying to toot my own horn here.
